Mental Health First Aid For the Suicidal person
Who should take this course
This course is open to any adult. It is not a postvention course and is not recommended for individuals recently bereaved by suicide. The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Conversations about Suicide course is not a therapy or a support group and it is important that people undertaking the course are feeling relatively robust when they undertake it. Specific postvention support services can be found at the Beyond Blue website.
At the completion of the course you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to safely have a conversation with a suicidal person.
The course will teach you how to:
- Identify warning signs for suicide
- Have a conversation with someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Confidently support a person in crisis
Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with or developing a mental illness. It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in help provided.
The course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience and professionals.
Note: This course is not a therapy or support group.
