CARER'S PEER MENTOR PROGRAM - 'CARING FOR THE CARER'

To inspire, educate, reward and connect those in our community who give so much.

Applications are now open for the first ever intake of the selectability Training 'Caring For The Carer' program.

Twenty Townsville-based carers will be accepted into the first intake starting early November 2019.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

  • Applicants must be a carer (with or without NDIS plan) OR unpaid parent/sibling carer of someone with an NDIS plan.
  • You must be caring for someone with a mental health illness
  • This course is delivered in Townsville and is open to those living in the Townsville region.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants will be asked to submit an application form providing contact details and answering some brief questions relating to:

  • Your carer status
  • Reasons why you would like to participate

This program, understood to be the first of its kind in Queensland, will offer 20 Townsville-based Carers the opportunity to connect and grow their support network while also building confidence, self-value and nationally-recognised training.

Funded through Regional Queensland's leading mental wellbeing and suicide prevention service provider selectability, the program is valued at $15,000 per participant and will be fully-funded for successful applicants.

Caring For The Carer aims to:

  • Build dignity and self-worth through attaining a nationally accredited qualifications
  • Promote self-care, self value and taking time out 
  • Build a strong community network of local carers – providing peer mentoring and referral capacity
  • Promoting carers to form strong connections creating a hub of support for the local community
  • Form friendships and relationships
  • Build knowledge and skills in community to provide peer mentoring for other carers
  • Building leadership capacity within the carer community

RECREATIONAL STUDY TOURS

Learning to give back to yourself too

A large part of this program is about encouraging Carers to recognise the importance of self-care and valuing themselves. 

We will assist Carers to learn how to comfortably take time out for themselves while ensuring those they care for are being well looked after.

This will include a recreation study cruise - fully-funded under the program.

TEAM BUILDING

Your Caring For Carers experience will connect you with a new network or like-minded people experiencing the same sorts of challenges and rewards as you.

Our team building elements will include excursions and activities to build on that mutual understanding to help build strong and ongoing connections - a network of local carers willing and able to provide mentoring to others within the sector. You will build your knowledge and skills throughout the course which will enable you to provide peer mentoring for other carers. This program aims to recognise and build dignity and self-worth in participants through attaining a nationally accredited qualification and undertaking new and exciting life experiences as part of the study tour excursions.

This advanced qualification can help you achieve your goals, and provide you with the skills, knowledge and community connections to be an effective mentor in your community. You will learn to take time time out to debrief from your caring role and experiences, share with others and be an effective mentor.

The Diploma of Community Services (Case Management) - CHC52015 reflects the roles of community services, case management and social housing workers involved in the managing, coordinating and/or delivering of person-centred services to individuals, groups and communities.
